  • Author: Thomas
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

A delicious and easy-to-make Bourbon Chicken recipe featuring tender chicken cubes simmered in a sweet and savory bourbon sauce, served over fluffy white rice and garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken

  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless chicken (cut into cubes, breasts or thighs)
  • Salt & Pepper, to taste
  • 2 Tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil

Sauce

  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 inch ginger (grated)
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar

To Serve

  • 2 cups white rice
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Green onions, sliced, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Season and coat chicken: Season the chicken cubes with salt and pepper. Toss them with cornstarch until all pieces are evenly coated to ensure a crispy texture when cooked.
  2. Brown the chicken: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 6-7 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside but not fully cooked through. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside, keeping it warm.
  3. Prepare the sauce: In a bowl, combine minced garlic, grated ginger, chicken broth, brown sugar, bourbon, low sodium soy sauce, and apple cider vinegar. Stir well to blend the flavors.
  4. Cook the sauce: Reduce the skillet heat to medium and pour in the prepared sauce mixture. Bring it to a boil and let it cook for 7-8 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and reduce slightly.
  5. Simmer chicken in sauce: Return the browned chicken to the skillet with the sauce. Cook for an additional 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is fully cooked and the sauce is thick with a rich brown color.
  6. Serve: Plate the cooked bourbon chicken over steamed white rice. Garnish with sliced green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds before serving.

Notes

  • Use boneless, skinless chicken thighs for more tender and juicy results, but breasts also work well.
  • Adjust the amount of bourbon based on preference; for a milder flavor reduce slightly.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, add a cornstarch slurry (1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp water) during the sauce cooking step.
  • Serve immediately after cooking to enjoy the best texture and flavor.
  • This dish pairs perfectly with steamed or fried rice.
