			Sausage and Dough
- 8 breakfast sausages
- 1 tube refrigerated crescent rolls
French Toast Custard
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream (or preferred dairy)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of kosher salt
Cinnamon Sugar Topping (Optional)
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and promote even baking.
- Cook Sausages: Prepare the breakfast sausages according to the package instructions, then allow them to cool slightly before handling.
- Make French Toast Custard: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, heavy cream, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of kosher salt until fully combined and smooth.
- Prepare Crescent Dough: Open the refrigerated crescent roll tube and separate the dough along the perforations into individual triangles.
- Brush Dough with Custard: Place one crescent dough triangle on your work surface with the wide end facing you, then brush it generously with the prepared French toast custard mixture.
- Wrap Sausages: Lay one cooked sausage link across the wide end of the dough triangle and carefully roll it away from you, encasing the sausage. Brush the outside of each rolled piece with more French toast custard.
- Arrange on Baking Sheet: Place each wrapped sausage on the parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them evenly. Repeat this process for all the remaining sausages and dough pieces.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the crescent rolls are golden brown, puffed, and cooked through.
- Add Cinnamon Sugar Butter Glaze (Optional): While the pigs in a blanket are still hot, rub a small piece of butter over each one’s surface and immediately sprinkle the top with a mixture of granulated sugar and ground cinnamon for a sweet finish.
- Serve: Serve warm with maple syrup on the side for dipping. Enjoy your sweet and savory breakfast pigs in a blanket!
Notes
- You can substitute heavy cream with whole milk or any preferred dairy if lighter options are desired.
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the custard mixture.
- Choose your favorite breakfast sausages, whether pork, chicken, or vegetarian alternatives, to customize this dish.
- These pigs in a blanket are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven but can be reheated in an oven or toaster oven for crispiness.
- If preferred, skip the cinnamon sugar topping for a less sweet savory snack.
