Chia Berry Sauce Recipe

  • Author: Thomas
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: About 1 1/2 cups 1x
  • Diet: Vegan

Description

A simple and healthy Chia Berry Sauce made with frozen fruit and chia seeds. This versatile sauce can be used as a jam, topping, or spread, naturally thickened by chia seeds without any added pectin or gelatin.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruit Base

  • 3 cups frozen fruit

Liquid & Sweetener

  • 2 tablespoons orange juice or water (orange juice helps cut tartness)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (optional, for sweetness)

Thickener

  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds (add 1 tablespoon extra for a more jammy consistency)

Instructions

  1. Heat the Fruit: Place the 3 cups of frozen fruit into a medium-sized pot. Add 2 tablespoons of orange juice or water, and 1 tablespoon of maple syrup if using. Turn the heat to medium and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  2. Muddle the Fruit: Once simmering, use a potato masher to mash the fruit to your preferred consistency—this helps release natural juices and break down the fruit for the sauce.
  3. Add Chia Seeds: Remove the pot from heat and stir in 2 tablespoons of chia seeds thoroughly, ensuring they are evenly dispersed throughout the fruit mixture.
  4. Let it Thicken: Allow the mixture to sit for 20 to 25 minutes. During this time, the chia seeds will absorb liquid and thicken the sauce. For a thicker, more jam-like consistency, stir in an additional 1 to 2 tablespoons of chia seeds after this period.
  5. Store the Sauce: Transfer the finished chia berry sauce to a mason jar or airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days for best freshness.

Notes

  • Use any combination of frozen berries or fruit of your choice to customize flavor.
  • Orange juice adds brightness and balances tartness, but can be replaced with water if preferred.
  • Maple syrup is optional; adjust sweetness to taste.
  • For a thicker jam-like texture, add more chia seeds gradually.
  • Stir the sauce well before serving if it sits for a long time, as chia seeds may settle.
