Ingredients
Scale
French Toast Sticks
- 4 thick slices white bread, preferably stale
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- Pinch of salt
- 1/3 cup white sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon powder
- 3 tbsp butter
- Maple syrup, to serve (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Bread: Remove the crust from each bread slice and cut each slice into 3 equal thick batons to create the french toast sticks.
- Mix Egg Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the eggs, milk, and a pinch of salt. This mixture will be used to coat the bread sticks.
- Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: On a separate plate, combine the white sugar and cinnamon powder to use as the coating after frying.
- Melt Butter: Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a large pan over medium-high heat, preparing it for cooking the sticks.
- Coat and Cook First Batch: Quickly roll the bread sticks in the egg mixture, shaking off any excess to avoid sogginess. Place them in the hot pan and cook in two batches to avoid overcrowding.
- Fry Until Golden: Cook the sticks on each side until they turn a golden brown color, ensuring they are cooked through but still soft inside.
- Coat in Cinnamon Sugar: Immediately transfer the hot sticks to the cinnamon sugar plate, rolling them quickly so the coating sticks well while they are still warm.
- Cook Remaining Sticks: Melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter and repeat the cooking and coating process with the remaining bread sticks.
- Serve: Serve the cinnamon French toast sticks warm with maple syrup for dipping, for an extra sweet and flavorful finish.
Notes
- Using stale bread helps the sticks hold their shape and absorb the egg mixture better without becoming too soggy.
- Do not soak the bread sticks in the egg mixture for too long to prevent them from falling apart.
- Cook the french toast sticks in batches to ensure even and crispy cooking.
- Serve immediately for the best flavor and texture, as they are crisp on the outside and tender inside.
- Maple syrup is optional but recommended for extra sweetness.
