Cream Cheese Wontons Recipe

  • Author: Thomas
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 24 wontons 1x

Description

Deliciously crispy cream cheese wontons filled with a smooth, sweetened cream cheese mixture, lightly seasoned with onion powder and optionally garnished with fresh chives. These homemade wontons are perfect as an appetizer or snack, fried until golden brown for a satisfying crunch.

Ingredients

Scale

Wontons

  • 24 wonton wrappers
  • 8 ounces cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 egg (beaten)
  • Oil for frying (about 4 inches deep)
  • 2 teaspoons minced chives (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sugar, and onion powder. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
  2. Fill wonton wrappers: Lay one wonton wrapper flat on a clean surface and place about one teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture in the center. Brush the edges of the wrapper lightly with beaten egg to help seal.
  3. Fold and seal: Bring two opposite corners of the wrapper together over the filling and pinch to seal. Then bring the remaining two corners together and pinch again, forming a neat, tightly sealed package.
  4. Repeat assembly: Continue filling and sealing the remaining wonton wrappers with the cream cheese mixture until all are prepared.
  5. Heat oil for frying: Pour about 4 inches of oil into a deep pan and heat to 350°F (175°C), ensuring the oil is hot enough for frying but not smoking.
  6. Fry the wontons: Carefully place 5 to 6 wontons at a time into the hot oil. Fry for about 3 to 5 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure they brown evenly on all sides.
  7. Drain excess oil: Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried wontons and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  8. Serve: Sprinkle the fried wontons with minced chives if desired. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Make sure the oil temperature is consistent at 350°F to ensure even frying without absorbing too much oil.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan during frying to maintain oil temperature and crispiness.
  • The wontons are best enjoyed fresh and hot for maximum crispness.
  • You can prepare the wontons ahead and refrigerate them for up to an hour before frying.
  • For a savory twist, try adding finely chopped cooked shrimp or green onions into the cream cheese filling.
