Ingredients
Scale
Wontons
- 24 wonton wrappers
- 8 ounces cream cheese (softened)
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 egg (beaten)
- Oil for frying (about 4 inches deep)
- 2 teaspoons minced chives (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sugar, and onion powder. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
- Fill wonton wrappers: Lay one wonton wrapper flat on a clean surface and place about one teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture in the center. Brush the edges of the wrapper lightly with beaten egg to help seal.
- Fold and seal: Bring two opposite corners of the wrapper together over the filling and pinch to seal. Then bring the remaining two corners together and pinch again, forming a neat, tightly sealed package.
- Repeat assembly: Continue filling and sealing the remaining wonton wrappers with the cream cheese mixture until all are prepared.
- Heat oil for frying: Pour about 4 inches of oil into a deep pan and heat to 350°F (175°C), ensuring the oil is hot enough for frying but not smoking.
- Fry the wontons: Carefully place 5 to 6 wontons at a time into the hot oil. Fry for about 3 to 5 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure they brown evenly on all sides.
- Drain excess oil: Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried wontons and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Serve: Sprinkle the fried wontons with minced chives if desired. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- Make sure the oil temperature is consistent at 350°F to ensure even frying without absorbing too much oil.
- Do not overcrowd the pan during frying to maintain oil temperature and crispiness.
- The wontons are best enjoyed fresh and hot for maximum crispness.
- You can prepare the wontons ahead and refrigerate them for up to an hour before frying.
- For a savory twist, try adding finely chopped cooked shrimp or green onions into the cream cheese filling.
