  • Author: Thomas
  • Total Time: 16 minutes
  • Yield: 4 sandwiches 1x

Description

A delicious and comforting grilled ham and cheese sandwich featuring layers of melted cheddar and ham, enhanced with a tangy honey mustard sauce. Perfectly toasted to golden brown perfection on a skillet, this classic sandwich is elevated with a sweet and spicy dip that can be prepared ahead of time.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Butter

  • 8 slices bread
  • 2 Tablespoons butter (28 g)

Sandwich Filling

  • 4 slices ham
  • 8 slices cheddar cheese (or Swiss, provolone, white cheddar, or your favorite kind)

Honey Mustard Sauce

  • 1/4 cup honey (85 g)
  • 2 Tablespoons yellow mustard (30 mL)
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard (15 mL)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (113 g)
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (5 mL), optional

Instructions

  1. Prepare Honey Mustard Sauce: In a bowl, combine honey, yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, and optional hot sauce. Stir until smooth. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use; can be made in advance for convenience.
  2. Optional Bread Preparation: Spread a thin layer of the prepared honey mustard sauce on the inside surfaces of each bread slice to add extra flavor to your sandwiches.
  3. Assemble Sandwiches: Layer each sandwich with 3 slices of cheddar cheese (or your cheese choice) and a slice of ham. Make sure the layers are even for balanced flavor.
  4. Butter the Bread: Spread butter on the outside of each sandwich bread slice evenly to ensure a golden, crispy crust when cooked.
  5. Cook the Sandwich: Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Carefully flip the sandwich and cook the other side for a few more minutes until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden and crispy.
  6. Serve: Serve your warm grilled ham and cheese sandwiches immediately, accompanied by the honey mustard sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Use your preferred cheese variety such as Swiss or provolone for a different flavor profile.
  • The honey mustard sauce can be prepared a day ahead to save time.
  • Adjust the amount of hot sauce in the sauce according to your spice preference.
  • Cooking on medium-low heat helps prevent burning and ensures the cheese melts perfectly.
