  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

This Homemade Marinara Sauce is a simple, classic Italian tomato sauce made with fresh ingredients like olive oil, garlic, onions, crushed tomatoes, and herbs. It’s rich in flavor and perfect for pasta dishes, pizzas, or as a base for other recipes.

Ingredients

Scale

Marinara Sauce Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 medium yellow onion (1/2 cup chopped)
  • 3 garlic cloves (finely minced)
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper (freshly ground)
  • 1 Tbsp fresh basil (or parsley, finely minced, plus more to garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat the Olive Oil: Place a medium saucepan over medium heat and add 2 Tbsp olive oil. Heat until the oil is hot but not smoking.
  2. Sauté Onions and Garlic: Add 1/2 cup chopped onion to the hot oil. Stir often and cook until the onion softens and turns golden, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and stir continuously for 1 minute until fragrant but not browned.
  3. Add Tomatoes and Seasonings: Pour in the 28 oz crushed tomatoes, then add 1/2 tsp dried oregano, 1/2 tsp sea salt, and 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper. Stir well to combine all ingredients.
  4. Simmer the Sauce: Bring the mixture to a light boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer partially covered for about 15 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure the sauce doesn’t stick to the pan.
  5. Finish with Fresh Basil: Stir in 1 Tbsp finely chopped fresh basil just before turning off the heat. Optionally, garnish with additional basil or parsley when serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute fresh parsley for basil if preferred, but basil provides a more traditional flavor.
  • If you prefer a smoother sauce, you can blend the sauce after simmering.
  • Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste before serving.
