Homemade Reese’s Eggs Recipe

  • Author: Thomas
  • Total Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Yield: About 24 egg-shaped pieces depending on size 1x

Description

Homemade Reese’s Eggs are a delicious peanut butter and chocolate treat made from a simple dough of powdered sugar, creamy peanut butter, and butter, shaped into egg forms, frozen, and then dipped in melted milk chocolate for a perfect seasonal delight.

Ingredients

Scale

Peanut Butter Dough

  • 3 Cups Powdered Sugar
  • 1 1/2 Cups Creamy Peanut Butter
  • 1/4 Cup Butter or Margarine (melted)
  • 2 Tablespoons Milk

Chocolate Coating

  • 12 Bags Milk Chocolate Chips (about 1224 oz total)
  • 2 Tablespoons Shortening

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Beat together powdered sugar, peanut butter, and melted butter until crumbly. Then add 2 tablespoons of milk and continue beating until the dough softens. It’s okay if the dough remains slightly crumbly.
  2. Shape the Eggs: On a floured surface, roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use egg-shaped cookie cutters or a knife to cut the dough into egg shapes.
  3. Freeze the Dough: Place the shaped eggs on a cookie sheet and freeze for one hour to firm up.
  4. Melt the Chocolate: Combine the milk chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon of shortening in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until smooth and melted without burning.
  5. Dip the Eggs: Using a spoon, coat each frozen peanut butter egg with the melted chocolate. Place the dipped eggs on wax paper to set. Repeat melting chocolate with the second bag and shortening if more coating is needed.
  6. Set and Serve: Allow the chocolate to fully set before enjoying your homemade Reese’s Eggs.

Notes

  • Use creamy peanut butter for the best texture.
  • If the dough is too crumbly after adding milk, it will still hold together once shaped and frozen.
  • Freezing the eggs before dipping helps the chocolate coat them better.
  • Shortening in the chocolate helps achieve a smooth, glossy coating.
  • Store finished eggs in the refrigerator to keep the chocolate firm.
