Hot French Onion Dip Recipe

  • Author: Thomas
  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

This Hot French Onion Dip is a rich and savory appetizer featuring caramelized onions, creamy cream cheese, and melted Gruyere, topped with crispy French fried onions and served warm with sliced baguette. Perfect for gatherings and parties, it combines deep onion flavors with a cheesy, bubbly finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Base Ingredients

  • 4 Tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter (can use salted)
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Additional Ingredients

  • 10.5 ounce can French Onion soup (can use low or no sodium)
  • 8 ounce block cream cheese, room temperature
  • 12 ounce block Gruyere cheese, shredded (about 3 cups)
  • 6 ounces French fried crispy onions
  • Fresh thyme (for topping, optional)
  • 1 baguette, sliced

Instructions

  1. Heat Butter and Onions: Heat a medium-sized cast iron skillet (about 10 inches) over medium heat and add 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter. Once melted, add the thinly sliced onions, Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Caramelize Onions: Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until they are deeply golden and caramelized, about 20-25 minutes. Reduce heat if they start to brown too quickly. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  4. Combine Soup and Cream Cheese: Stir in the French Onion soup and room temperature cream cheese into the softened onions. Place skillet over low heat until the cream cheese has completely melted and mixture is smooth.
  5. Add Toppings: Remove the skillet from heat and evenly top the dip with shredded Gruyere cheese and French fried crispy onions.
  6. Bake the Dip: Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the dip is bubbly and golden on top.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Garnish the dip with fresh thyme leaves if desired. Serve hot with sliced baguette for dipping.

Notes

  • Use a cast iron skillet if possible for even heat and oven safety.
  • Make sure cream cheese is at room temperature to ensure easy melting and smooth texture.
  • If you prefer less salt, use low or no sodium French onion soup.
  • Fresh thyme adds a nice herby finish but is optional.
  • For a crunchier topping, add extra French fried onions just before serving.
  • This dip can be made ahead and reheated in the oven.
