Monte Cristo Rolls Recipe

  • Author: Thomas
  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 6 rolls (serves 3-4) 1x

Description

Monte Cristo Rolls are a delightful twist on the classic sandwich, combining layers of ham, turkey, Swiss cheese, and raspberry jam wrapped in soft pizza dough. Baked to golden perfection and finished with a custard-like egg wash, these rolls are served dusted with confectioners’ sugar alongside maple syrup for dipping, making a perfect sweet and savory brunch or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough and Spread

  • Unsalted butter, for baking dish
  • All-purpose flour, for dusting
  • 2 (13.8-oz.) cans pizza dough (preferably Pillsbury), divided
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard

Fillings

  • 8 oz. deli ham, thinly sliced
  • 6 Tbsp. raspberry jam
  • 8 oz. Swiss cheese, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz. deli turkey, thinly sliced

Egg Wash and Topping

  • 1 large egg
  • 2 Tbsp. heavy cream
  • Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Arrange a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 13″ x 9″ baking dish with unsalted butter to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the First Dough Layer: On a lightly floured surface, spread out one can of pizza dough into a rectangle. Spread the Dijon mustard evenly over the dough leaving a 1/4 inch border around the edges. Layer the thinly sliced ham over the mustard-covered dough.
  3. Add Second Dough and Fillings: Unravel the second can of pizza dough and place it on top of the ham layer. Spread raspberry jam over this second dough layer, again leaving a 1/4 inch border. Evenly layer the Swiss cheese slices over the jam, covering the surface completely. Follow by layering the thinly sliced turkey over the cheese.
  4. Roll and Slice: Starting from the left side, tightly roll up the dough layers into a log shape, tucking in the edges as you go to seal the fillings inside. Use a sharp knife to slice the roll into six equal pieces. Place the slices flat side down in the prepared baking dish, similar to cinnamon rolls.
  5. Brush with Egg Mixture: In a small bowl, beat the large egg with the heavy cream until blended, creating a custard-like wash. Brush this mixture generously over the tops and sides of each roll to enhance browning and flavor.
  6. Bake the Rolls: Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the rolls are puffed up and golden brown on the outside. Once baked, remove from oven and allow to cool slightly.
  7. Serve: Transfer the rolls to a serving platter. Dust with confectioners’ sugar and serve with maple syrup on the side for dipping to enhance the sweet and savory experience.

Notes

  • Use refrigerated pizza dough for ease and consistent results.
  • If raspberry jam is unavailable, consider using strawberry or another favorite berry jam.
  • For best slicing, use a serrated knife and clean between cuts to maintain neat rolls.
  • These rolls are best served warm for optimal flavor and texture.
  • Leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated in a warm oven.
