Saltine Cracker Toffee Recipe

  • Author: Thomas
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 40 servings (1 cracker each) 1x

Description

Saltine Cracker Toffee is a delightful crunchy and sweet treat that layers salty crackers with a buttery caramel toffee, topped with melted chocolate and chopped pecans. This easy-to-make dessert combines contrasting flavors and textures for an irresistible snack or party treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Cracker Base

  • 40 saltine crackers (any brand)

Toffee Sauce

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (salted butter can also be used)
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed (dark brown sugar can be substituted)

Toppings

  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips (milk or dark chocolate chips can also be used)
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  2. Arrange Crackers: Lay the 40 saltine crackers in a single layer, covering the entire bottom of the prepared baking sheet completely.
  3. Make Toffee Mixture: In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and light brown sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the mixture comes to a boil.
  4. Boil Toffee: Once boiling, allow the mixture to boil rapidly for 5 minutes without stirring. Use a timer to keep track precisely.
  5. Pour Toffee over Crackers: Remove the saucepan from heat and carefully pour the hot toffee evenly over the saltine crackers, using a spatula to spread so all crackers are coated.
  6. Add Pecans: Sprinkle the chopped pecans evenly on top of the toffee-coated crackers to add crunch and flavor.
  7. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 6-8 minutes or until the toffee mixture is bubbling all over.
  8. Separate Crackers: Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly. Using a metal spatula, carefully separate the crackers and transfer them to another parchment-lined sheet for decorating.
  9. Prepare Chocolate for Piping: Place two sandwich-sized Ziploc bags, one inside the other, over the mouth of a glass to hold and prevent burns from the hot chocolate. This setup will serve as your piping bag.
  10. Melt Chocolate: Microwave chocolate chips at 50% power in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth and fully melted.
  11. Pipe Chocolate on Crackers: Pour the melted chocolate into the prepared double bag piping setup. Seal the bag and snip a small corner off to pipe the chocolate decoratively over the toffee crackers.
  12. Cool and Set: Let the chocolate-topped crackers cool completely to allow the chocolate to set before serving or transporting.

Notes

  • You can substitute milk or dark chocolate chips in place of semisweet chocolate chips for variation.
  • Ensure not to stir the toffee mixture during the 5-minute boil to achieve the right consistency.
  • Using a double Ziploc bag inside each other helps prevent burns while piping hot chocolate.
  • Store the toffee crackers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
  • Be cautious when handling hot toffee to avoid burns.
