This Slow Cooker Chocolate Lava Cake is a rich and gooey dessert with a perfectly moist chocolate cake layer topped with a luscious molten chocolate sauce. Made effortlessly by layering cake batter and topping in a slow cooker, it results in a warm, comforting treat ideal for any occasion. Serve it with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an indulgent finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Cake Batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Topping

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 1/4 cups hot water

Serving

  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, for serving
  • Maraschino cherries (optional), for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the slow cooker: Spray the inside of the slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking before adding any ingredients.
  2. Make the cake batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, combine the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Create a well in the dry ingredients and pour the wet mixture into the center. Whisk until smooth and fully combined.
  3. Pour batter into slow cooker: Transfer the prepared batter into the bottom of the sprayed slow cooker, spreading evenly.
  4. Prepare the topping: In a bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cocoa powder until well combined.
  5. Add topping and hot water: Evenly sprinkle the sugar and cocoa powder topping over the batter in the slow cooker. Carefully pour the hot water over the top without stirring to create the molten chocolate sauce beneath the cake.
  6. Cook the cake: Cover the slow cooker and cook on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, or on LOW for approximately 5 hours, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean with a few moist crumbs. The top should be set, and the bottom will have a gooey chocolate sauce.
  7. Serve: Spoon portions of the cake onto plates, ensuring some of the molten chocolate sauce from the bottom is included. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream and garnish with maraschino cherries if desired.

Notes

  • Use good quality cocoa powder for the best chocolate flavor.
  • Do not stir after pouring hot water to preserve the lava cake effect.
  • Make sure to spray your slow cooker well to avoid sticking.
  • Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your slow cooker’s heat settings.
