  • Author: Thomas
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4-6 rice balls 1x

Description

Spam rice balls are a simple and delicious snack made with seasoned rice, grilled spam, scrambled eggs, and seaweed flakes. This recipe uses easy-to-find ingredients and a rice ball mold to create perfectly shaped onigiri-style rice balls, making them both tasty and visually appealing. Ideal for a quick meal or a fun cooking activity with children.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1/2 canned ham (Spam)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 pack seasoned laver (seaweed)
  • 2 servings instant rice
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • A little oil for cooking
  • 2 pinches salt
  • 1 pinch pepper (Huru as referenced)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Spam: Cut the canned ham (Spam) into bite-sized pieces. Heat a pan with a little oil over medium heat and cook the Spam until it turns golden brown and slightly crispy. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Make Scrambled Eggs: In a bowl, whisk two eggs with 2 pinches of salt and 1 pinch of pepper. Heat an oiled pan over medium heat to avoid burning. Pour the egg mixture in and scramble gently until fully cooked but still soft. Remove from heat.
  3. Prepare Seaweed Flakes: Take 2 packs of seasoned laver and place them into a sanitary bag. Crush them using your hands until they become flakes or powder. If you have seaweed powder, it can be used for convenience.
  4. Mix the Rice: Put 2 bowls of cooked instant rice into a large bowl. Add the scrambled eggs, seaweed flakes, 1/2 tablespoon sesame oil, 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, and the cooked Spam. Mix everything thoroughly. No additional seasoning is necessary as the seaweed and Spam are already flavorful.
  5. Shape the Rice Balls: Using a rice ball mold, layer rice, Spam, and then more rice. Close the lid of the mold firmly to shape the rice balls evenly. The recipe uses a 1,000 won rice ball mold available at stores like Daiso, which makes shaping the rice balls very easy.
  6. Serve: Your super simple and delicious Spam rice balls are ready! The combination of grilled Spam, scrambled eggs, seaweed flakes, sesame seeds, and sesame oil provides a delicious and well-seasoned flavor. These rice balls are perfect for a quick snack or lunch and are especially fun and easy to make with children.

Notes

  • Use medium heat when cooking eggs to avoid overcooking or burning.
  • The rice ball mold makes shaping easier but can be done by hand if unavailable.
  • Seasoned laver is already flavored, so additional seasoning is not required.
  • Instant rice can be replaced with freshly cooked rice if preferred.
  • For added flavor, you can toast the sesame seeds briefly before adding.
