Ingredients
Scale
Broth
- 4 cups low sodium chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
- 2 cloves garlic (smashed)
- 2 inch piece of ginger (peeled)
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
Wontons & Garnish
- 3 cups frozen wontons
- 2 green onions (thinly sliced)
- Fresh cilantro (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the broth: In a large pot, combine the chicken broth, low sodium soy sauce, smashed garlic cloves, peeled ginger piece, and sesame oil. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Simmer the broth: Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let the broth simmer gently for 10 minutes to allow the flavors of garlic and ginger to infuse the broth.
- Cook the wontons: Add the frozen wontons directly into the simmering broth. Cook them for 5 to 7 minutes, or until they float to the surface and are thoroughly warmed through.
- Remove aromatics: Carefully remove the ginger piece and garlic cloves from the pot and discard them to prevent overpowering flavors in the soup.
- Serve and garnish: Ladle the wonton soup into bowls and top with thinly sliced green onions and fresh cilantro for a burst of freshness and color.
Notes
- Frozen wontons can be substituted with homemade or store-bought fresh wontons for a different texture.
- You can use vegetable broth to make this recipe vegetarian, but omit the wontons or choose vegetarian wontons.
- Adjust soy sauce quantity to control the saltiness of the soup.
- For extra heat, add a dash of chili oil or fresh chili slices.
- Leftover soup can be refrigerated and reheated gently on the stovetop.
